Vinarium Lendava is a tower standing over 50m into the air, offering all who reach the top an unrivalled 360° view of the local area. Visitors can climb 240 stairs or take a lift to the observation deck, where on clear days you can see the lowlands and hills of Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia and Austria. Once you’ve enjoyed the views head down to the ground floor to enjoy delectable local cuisine paired with local wines. A trip to Prekmurje would not be complete without sampling some of the local specialties.
Perhaps foremost among these is Prleška tünka, or Prekmurje ham, produced using a protected method and going very well with a glass of red. Another must try dish is bograč, which is similar to goulash and even has its own festival each August. For those with a sweet tooth there’s gibanica, a delicious dessert with layers of phyllo pastry, cream cheese, raisins and other delights. The tower provides a convenient stop on the Lendava wine road, which is predominately lined with producers of excellent white wines.

Prekmurje wine region
Prekmurje is found in the far northeast corner of Slovenia, wedged between the borders with Austria and Hungary, and much of the winemaking activity here takes place in Lendava and Goričko. The landscapes are quite breathtaking, with forests and rolling hills covering much of the countryside, while the pace of life is noticeably slower and more relaxed than most other places in the country. When it comes to wine, dry and semi-dry white wines are most typical, with Laški Rizling (Italian Reisling) the most widely produced, followed by Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Renski Rizling, as well as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Kerner, Rumeni Muškat (Yellow Muscat) and Traminec (Traminer), while red wine production only amounts to some 3% of the total.
This district is notable for the number of younger winemakers trying new methods or rediscovering old ones. In addition to its burgeoning wine scene, Prekmurje is often regarded as the friendliest and most welcoming destination in Slovenia, and any visit here is guaranteed to be met with lots warm of smiles and copious amounts of local cuisine.
