Kranj is a lively Slovenian city where rich culture and modern vibrancy meet. With its warm community, engaging local events, and welcoming cafés and restaurants, it offers a genuine taste of Slovenian hospitality and charm.

Kranj, one of Slovenia’s oldest cities, boasts a rich history dating back to Roman times and features a charming medieval old town with landmarks such as the Church of St. Cantianus. Perched above the scenic Kokra River Canyon, it offers stunning natural views and unique attractions like the World War II tunnels beneath the city. Known for its vibrant cultural scene, Kranj hosts events at Layer House and the Prešeren Theatre, named after the famous Slovenian poet. Additionally, the city is home to the Gorenjska Museum, beautiful green spaces, and the popular Šmarjetna Gora hill, making it a dynamic destination with a blend of historical and natural appeal.

Thanks to its ideal position at the foothills of the mountains but also only a short commute (20km) to Ljubljana, Kranj is a popular place for young families to settle down, as property prices are a bit more reasonable here than in the capital, and an abundance of shopping centers and other modern conveniences have been built in recent years.

Of course it’s Kranj’s historic center that is still the main draw for most tourists and day trippers. Protected as a national cultural monument since 1983, the lively old town boasts a variety of diverse sights, from religious monuments and ethnological museums to modern arts spaces and unique remnants from World War II. For most Slovenes the city is inextricably linked with the nation’s greatest poet, France Prešeren, who lived and worked here in the mid-19th century.
