Julian Alps is the region in the north-west of Slovenia, featuring mighty mountain peaks, post-perfect lakes and emerald green rivers. But what makes the area really stand out is their sustainable and inclusive tourism, which successfully incorporates natural and cultural elements of the local environment and creates a greater value for all: tourists, the local community and employees. They invite visitors to feel at home, but at the same time emphasize responsible attitude towards local environment.
Slovenia makes National Geographic’s coveted ‘Best of the world’ list for 2023
Every year, National Geographic unveils its annual list of the 25 inspiring destinations for the renewed travel landscape to help individuals get a jump on planning for the year ahead. For 2023, National Geographic’s Best of the World is themed around travel destinations and experiences that leverage the benefits of tourism to strengthen their local communities and environments, both natural and built. We are extremely proud Slovenia made the coveted 2023 list in the NATURE category!
SAVE THE DATE: The Ultimate Julian Alps Sensory Adventure Event
The Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) in cooperation with Julian Alps presents the first one time event promoted with a new NFT (non-fungible token) collection: The Ultimate Julian Alps Sensory Adventure powered by blockchain technology as tourism promotion activity. The NFTs are issued in a limited edition as unique digital souvenirs for selected journalists/media which will be able to utilise them by attending the unique one in time event in Julian Alps in May 2023.
Outdoor tourism: the leading promotional theme for 2022-2023
Slovenia is a green, active and healthy country. It is also one of Europe’s great outdoor adventure playgrounds. Regardless of the time of year you will find an adrenaline-fuelled activity to suit you, whether that’s rafting the turquoise waters of the Soča River, hiking stunning sections of the Julian Alps or, of course cycling along the impressive landscapes. Outdoor and sports tourism are also the leading promotional tourism theme of Slovenia in 2022-2023.
Sustainable gastronomy at its best
Slovenian cuisine impresses with local ingredients and sustainable approach, which is, thanks to the creativity of the chefs, wrapped up in amazing gastronomy stories. Sustainability on the plate is also one of the key characteristics of Slovenian cuisine, which is being celebrated and awarded. As many as 6 restaurants were awarded the Michelin Green Star for sustainability and numerous restaurants have been awarded with the Slovenian Green Cuisine label, which highlights their commitment to sustainability principles in gastronomy, which bring forth the importance of short supply chains. The new video featuring world-renowned Slovenian chef Ana Roš from the two-starred Michelin restaurant, Hiša Franko, unveils exactly this.
New hotel openings and renovations
During the lockdown, a number of hotels in Slovenia has been restored. The trend continues, as a number hotels opened or was renovated also in 2022. Here is a brief overview of the inspiring new hotels and accommodations from this year.

Planica, the host of FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2023
It is less than 150 days left until the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Planica 2023 will start. From February 21 to March 5, Planica and Kranjska Gora will turn into the venue of the biggest sporting event in the history of the Republic of Slovenia.
Slovenia, Guest of Honour at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt
In Slovenia, around 6000 book titles are published every year, which ranks it in range with Scandinavian countries and the UK. What is more, Slovenia has one of the best organised library systems in Europe, which results in around 12 borrowings per capita, and more than 150 bookstores and 3 bookstore chains – compared to the fact that we are a nation of only two million, these numbers are really impressive. This is why it comes as no surprise that Slovenia will be the Guest of Honour at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt 2023 and in Bologna a year later.
