The new season brings upgraded infrastructure, improved visitor facilities and additional family-friendly options, strengthening Slovenia’s reputation as one of Europe’s top compact winter destinations. Slovenia Launches Official Digital Nomad Visa — Remote Workers Welcome from 21 November 2025

Slovenia has just introduced a temporary residence permit for digital nomads, effective 21 November 2025, opening its doors to remote workers from non-EU/EEA countries. The permit allows eligible applicants to live in Slovenia for up to one year, while continuing to work remotely for foreign employers or clients.

Wealth of Slovenia’s Top 100 Climbs by 10% to €11.2 Billion

The combined net worth of Slovenia’s 100 richest individuals has climbed to an all-time high of approximately €11.2 billion, representing a nearly 10 percent year-on-year increase. The surge underlines resilience in key sectors despite broader economic uncertainty.

Strong growth in holdings related to manufacturing, energy-efficient technologies and real estate have bolstered fortunes at the top end of the wealth spectrum. Meanwhile, more modest gains among newcomers and returnees suggest a steady rather than explosive expansion in recent months.

According to the analysis, the entry threshold for joining the top 100 has risen, reflecting higher valuations across industrial companies and investment properties. Observers point to improved profit margins, strategic acquisitions and favourable market conditions as key drivers of this upward trend.

With Slovenia’s economic outlook still facing global headwinds, watchers will be monitoring whether this wealth growth can be sustained over the long term or if it marks a high-water mark ahead of a correction.

Slovenia Becomes First Eastern European Country to Legalise Assisted Dying

Slovenia has become the first country in Eastern Europe to legalise assisted dying, with lawmakers passing the bill in July after a national referendum in which 55 % of voters supported the change. Under the new legislation, eligible patients with terminal conditions can apply for assisted suicide — ingesting or injecting a substance themselves — after two declarations of intent to their doctor and a psychiatric assessment. Health workers retain the right to refuse participation.

Despite the legal milestone, the law’s implementation is threatened. A coalition called “Against the Poisoning of Patients” has gathered 15,000 signatures and aims for 40,000 within 35 days to trigger a binding referendum to repeal the act.Critics warn about risks for vulnerable patients and say doctors may segregate into specialist groups. As Slovenia’s medical community and society grapple with the change, uncertainty remains whether the law’s future will be upheld or overturned.

EU Targets Cheap Chinese Packages – Online Shopping About to Get Pricier

The European Union is moving to end the tax exemption on low-value parcels, a change that could reshape online shopping across Europe. The move directly targets the surge of ultra-cheap deliveries from Chinese giants like Shein and Temu, which have flooded EU markets with low-cost goods.

Slovenia’s Economy Gains Momentum – Strongest Growth in a Year

Slovenia’s economy accelerated in the third quarter of 2025, recording a 1.7% year-on-year growth, the fastest pace in the past twelve months. The improvement reflects stronger investment activity, particularly in construction and infrastructure, which helped offset weaker exports.

Household consumption rose modestly, supported by stable employment and wage growth, while external trade remained under pressure due to slower demand in major EU markets. Imports slightly increased, showing continued resilience in domestic demand.

Economists see this rebound as a positive sign of recovery, though they note that overall growth for 2025 will likely remain moderate amid global uncertainty. Still, the third-quarter performance confirms that Slovenia’s economy is regaining momentum, driven by investment, steady consumer spending, and improved business confidence.

GOVSI Podcast Tackles Disinformation: A Global Challenge

The latest episode of the GOVSI Podcast explores the growing threat of disinformation and the need for a European response. Host Zoran Potič is joined by Maria Giovanna Sessa of EU DisinfoLab, who emphasises that disinformation is not simply fake news, but “deliberately created” content aimed at undermining trust in democratic institutions. She highlights tactics such as Russia’s “Doppelgänger” campaign that cloned European media sites to spread pro-Russian narratives. While stressing that combatting disinformation isn’t censorship, Sessa underlines that freedom of speech is not equivalent to free reach. With legislation like the Digital Services Act, online platforms must now become more transparent and accountable. The podcast urges collective resilience through cooperation among governments, media, research institutions and civil society.

From Cans to Camp: Slovenia’s First Recycled Aluminium Shelter

Slovenia has unveiled its first shelter built entirely from recycled aluminium, marking a pioneering step in sustainable construction. The innovative structure was made using discarded aluminium cans collected locally and processed into building materials. This eco-friendly initiative demonstrates how waste can be transformed into functional architecture, offering both environmental and social benefits.

The shelter is designed to be low-impact and durable, suitable for temporary housing, emergency relief, or community use. Its modular construction allows flexible deployment in different settings — from parks or forests to disaster zones. The use of recycled aluminium ensures resistance to weather conditions and minimizes resource consumption in production.

Behind the project is a collaboration of designers, environmental activists, local authorities, and recycling firms. They aimed to showcase how circular economy principles can be translated to real built environments. The shelter signals a new direction for green architecture in Slovenia — one that turns everyday waste into resilient, practical infrastructure.
