Ljubljana Airport Winter Schedule Expands to 21 Destinations

From 26 October 2025, Fraport Slovenija’s Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport introduces its winter flight timetable, offering scheduled connections to 21 destinations via 18 airlines.

Compared to last season, the airport’s network has grown, with three new city links added: Las Palmas (Gran Canaria), Manchester and Barcelona. Established carriers maintain frequent service and some adjust operations – for example, Air Dolomiti takes over flights to Munich from Lufthansa this winter.

Passenger traffic is rising: in September 2025 the airport handled over 176 000 travellers, marking a 13% increase over September 2024, and showing an 8.6% growth in the first nine months of the year.

With the deeper winter schedule now in place until 28 March 2026 and charter offerings also available, Ljubljana-area travellers gain more travel flexibility and better connections across Europe and beyond.

Luka Dončić Named 2026 FIFA World Cup Ambassador for Los Angeles

Slovenian basketball superstar Luka Dončić has been announced as an official community ambassador for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles, one of the key host cities of the tournament.

As ambassador, Dončić will collaborate with the local organizing committee to promote the World Cup and support community initiatives aimed at inspiring young athletes and celebrating diversity through sport. “I’m proud to represent Los Angeles and be part of such a global event. Sports unite people, and the World Cup shows how powerful that connection can be,” Dončić said.

FIFA and the LA Host Committee praised Dončić’s global appeal, leadership, and passion for international sports, noting that his influence extends far beyond basketball.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest in history, hosted across 16 cities in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, with Los Angeles set to host several high-profile matches. Dončić’s involvement adds a touch of global star power to the tournament’s community outreach efforts.

Slovenia Elected to the UN Human Rights Council for 2026–2028

Slovenia has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–2028 term, receiving 176 votes from the UN General Assembly in New York. The election reaffirms Slovenia’s strong commitment to promoting and protecting human rights globally.

Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon welcomed the result, saying it comes at a time when multilateral cooperation and respect for human rights are more vital than ever. During its term, Slovenia will focus on gender equality, children’s and older persons’ rights, minority protection, and human rights education.

This marks Slovenia’s third term on the Council, after previously serving from 2007–2010 and 2016–2018, when it also held the presidency. The new mandate will begin on 1 January 2026.

Six Slovenian Hotels Awarded Prestigious Michelin Keys

Slovenia is celebrating a milestone as six of its hotels have just been honored with the coveted Michelin Key distinction, making the country part of a highly selective global hospitality circle.

Among the recipients, Chalet Sofija stood out by securing two keys, while Peterc Vineyard Estate, Otočec Castle, AS Boutique Hotel, Zlata ladjica, and Nebesa Chalets each received one key. With these additions, Slovenia now boasts 17 properties featured on the Michelin platform to date.

The Michelin Key is often viewed as the hotel equivalent of a Michelin star, awarded to hotels that excel not just in luxury but also in authenticity, character, service consistency, design excellence, and contribution to their locale. Of more than 7,000 hotels assessed globally, only a select few receive one to three keys — underlining the prestige of this recognition.

This honor underscores Slovenia’s growing prominence in boutique, sustainable, and design-forward hospitality — a signal to discerning travelers seeking immersive, high-quality stays beyond conventional luxury.

Pogi Makes Cycling History with Five Consecutive Monument Wins

Slovenian cycling star Tadej “Pogi” Pogačar has carved his name into the history books by winning Il Lombardia for the fifth year in a row, becoming the first rider ever to claim a Monument race five times consecutively.

In a dominant solo performance, Pogačar attacked on the legendary Passo di Ganda with around 36 km remaining and powered ahead to cross the finish line 1 minute 48 seconds ahead of Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel. His margin over Michael Storer, who finished third, exceeded three minutes.

This victory was his 10th Monument win and further showcased his extraordinary 2025 season, during which he also won the Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, becoming only the second rider ever—alongside Eddy Merckx—to win three Monuments in a single year.

Pogačar’s dominance this season also includes podium finishes in all five Monuments, a feat nobody has ever done before. Reflecting on his accomplishment, he said, “To win Il Lombardia five times in a row … every time I start, it feels like this race suits me… I owe a big thanks to all my teammates.”

Nets Instead of Wires on Slovenian–Italian Border

Slovenia is replacing demarcation wires along its border with Italy with a system of discreet nets, aiming to preserve the landscape’s natural aesthetics and reduce visual disturbances. The move seeks to modernize border control infrastructure while being sensitive to environmental and cultural concerns.

Authorities note that the nets will be far less intrusive, blending more harmoniously with the surroundings and minimizing the obstruction of views along border areas. The decision aligns with broader efforts to balance national security and cross-border cooperation with ecological and heritage preservation.

Local communities have expressed support, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the scenic beauty of border regions, which hold both historical and touristic value. The nets are expected to be installed in the coming months, replacing older wire systems while maintaining border integrity.

Poultry Producer CEO Named “Manager of the Year”

In a remarkable recognition of leadership and achievement, the CEO of a major Slovenian poultry producer has been awarded the title “Manager of the Year”. The honor underscores his strategic vision, operational excellence and successful guidance of the company through market challenges.

Under his leadership, the firm expanded production capacities, improved supply chain resilience, and implemented sustainability measures. Stakeholders highlighted his ability to balance profitability with social and environmental responsibility.

The award also positions the CEO—and by extension, the company—as a model for management in Slovenia’s agrifood sector. It sends a clear message that innovative leadership and ethical business practices are being increasingly valued and celebrated in the national economic landscape.
