Comparison of Internet Speeds by City
In today’s digital age, internet speed is not a luxury but a basic requirement for efficient work. Beyond work, the internet is increasingly used for education, entertainment, and communication. Whether you run an online business, participate in video meetings, stream high-definition content, or simply need a reliable connection for your daily activities, the quality of your internet can mean the difference between a productive day and one filled with frustration.
For digital nomads and anyone who relies on internet access on the go, connection speed in different cities becomes a key factor when choosing a location. Slovenia stands out as a country with generally high internet standards, but data reveals interesting differences between cities and compared to neighboring countries.

Researching Internet Speeds
For this research, we used data from Ookla Speedtest. This online service, widely used to measure internet speeds, publishes data on average speeds in all countries, which are then compiled into rankings of the fastest and slowest nations worldwide.
Ookla actually publishes two lists related to internet speed: one for average download speed on mobile networks and another for fixed broadband networks. The results are measured in Mbps (megabits per second), and the data here reflects the first half of 2025.

Mobile Internet Speeds in Slovenia
Slovenia ranks 26th worldwide in average mobile internet download speed, with an average of 132.95 Mbps. The fastest countries in this category are the UAE (584.97 Mbps), Qatar (507.47 Mbps), and Kuwait (413.57 Mbps), while the slowest are Bolivia (14.70 Mbps), Belarus (17.73 Mbps), and Eswatini (19.68 Mbps).
When compared with its neighbors, Slovenia clearly has the fastest mobile internet speeds in the region.
Fixed Broadband Speeds in Slovenia
In fixed broadband, Slovenia ranks 52nd, with an average speed of 120.08 Mbps. The fastest countries here are Singapore (386.96 Mbps), Chile (332.41 Mbps), and Hong Kong (324.97 Mbps). At the bottom of the list are Afghanistan (4.48 Mbps), Cuba (3.38 Mbps), and Syria (3.29 Mbps).
Although Slovenia performs strongly in mobile internet, its fixed broadband results are weaker. Compared with its neighbors, Austria and Hungary both record higher fixed broadband speeds than Slovenia.

Mobile Internet Speeds by City in Slovenia
Mobile connectivity has become an essential part of daily life, crucial for both tourists and locals. According to Ookla’s data, four of Slovenia’s largest cities outperform the national mobile average (132.95 Mbps): Ljubljana, Kranj, Maribor, and Celje.
Only Koper lags behind, with an average speed of 118.67 Mbps, below the national figure.
Fixed Broadband Speeds by City in Slovenia
Fixed broadband is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity for businesses and households, offering stable connections for multiple devices. While Slovenia lags behind many countries in fixed broadband speeds, city-level data reveals further variation.
Interestingly, Maribor leads with the fastest average fixed broadband speed at 140.07 Mbps, while Koper sits at the bottom with 96.37 Mbps.

Slovenia can boast solid internet speeds compared to the global average. Whether you rely on mobile or fixed broadband, you should not face major problems using your smartphone or laptop anywhere in the country. What stands out is that mobile internet speeds in Slovenia are significantly higher than fixed broadband speeds, and Maribor emerges as the best Slovenian city for internet performance overall.
