Nation states as imagined communities, as defined by Benedict Anderson, are based on shared narratives, stories that often transcend their own reality and grow into national mythologies. The political and historical reality of the two countries, Slovenia and Estonia, is in fact a fiction. Stories appropriated also by films, TV series and theatre performances. National catastrophes have been transformed into fun facts with which we can compete in general knowledge.
Fun Fact is a seemingly cheerful performance that counts the points of a fun quiz and haunts the audience with simple props. But the trick comes later, when, as we leave the theatre, we are caught thinking back to a time when the national catastrophes were very real and not just part of a mythological or theatrical alienation.
The Slovenian-Estonian co-production Fun Fact is the result of many festival coincidences and encounters between festival guests Katarina Stegnar, Primož Bezjak and Branko Jordan and their Estonian colleagues Eero Epner, Mart Kanger and Juhan Ulfsak, who we have hosted at the festival with their performances Workshop and It Stays As It Is.
