Stability and Compatibility Test

When entering the European and UK markets, compliance with cosmetics regulations is non-negotiable. One of the key requirements under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009 and the UK Schedule 34 to the Product Safety and Metrology etc. (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 is the Stability and compatibility test. This crucial procedure, highlighted in Annex I of the regulation, ensures that every cosmetic product remains safe, effective, and appealing throughout its lifecycle.

Why is the stability test important?

The stability test demonstrates whether a cosmetic product maintains its quality under various conditions from production until the end of its shelf life. It verifies that the product continues to meet required physical, chemical, and microbiological standards, while preserving functionality, safety, and aesthetics during handling, storage, and transport.

Based on the results, CE.way assigns the appropriate shelf life or period after opening (PAO), ensuring accurate labeling and consumer trust.

Compatibility matters as much as stability

Packaging plays a key role in protecting the product—but it can also be a source of risk. Substances from the packaging may leach into the cosmetic formula, impacting its quality and safety. For this reason, Stability and compatibility tests also evaluate the interaction between the product and its packaging. This ensures that no adverse effects compromise the product’s safety or performance.

How are stability tests performed?

CE.way performs both real-time and accelerated stability tests:

  • Real-time testing: carried out at room temperature and lasting as long as the product’s claimed shelf life.
  • Accelerated testing: performed at elevated temperatures (37, 40, or 45°C) over three months to simulate long-term stability in a shorter time.

Additional procedures include:

  • Refrigerator and freeze-thaw tests to predict transport stability
  • Sunlight exposure tests for transparent packaging

All tests are conducted in line with ISO 18811:2018 standards, ensuring the highest level of regulatory compliance.

What is monitored during testing?

Throughout the testing process, CE.way monitors:

  • Physical and chemical specifications (pH, viscosity, density)
  • Organoleptic properties (smell, color, texture)
  • Packaging compatibility and integrity

These insights provide a full picture of product performance, enabling manufacturers to market with confidence.
