Description

The Slovenian Mountaineering Route (SPP) was opened in 1953 in honor of the 60th anniversary of organized mountaineering in Slovenia at the initiative of its founding father Ivan Šumljak (1899-1984). It runs from the north-east to the south-west of Slovenia through most of the mountain world – from Maribor through Pohorje, Kamnik-Savinjske Alps, Karavanki, Julian Alps, Idrijski Hribovje, Trnovsko Gozd, Nanos, Vremščica and Slavnik to Debeli Rtič by the Adriatic Sea. It is the most popular connecting route in Slovenia and one of the oldest in Europe and in the world.

Gorazd Gorišek leads us through the Pohorje, Kamnik-Savinjske Alps and Karavanke, Mojca Stritar Kučuk through the Julian Alps, and Andraž Poljanec through the pre-Alpine world and the Karst all the way to the Slovenian Sea, the guide was translated into English by Gorazd Pipenbaher.

“The authors of the Slovenian mountain trail guide put all their knowledge and experience into the descriptions. All three are recognized writers of mountain literature, with extensive experience in the mountains, who already have outstanding literary and mountaineering mileage behind them. /…/ He is particularly impressed by the approach of presenting the stages, which are adapted to the needs and wishes of the users. A short introductory description is followed by a profile picture and a map, with information on the length of the route and elevations and walking times on the side. Possible ascents to the peaks, points of interest along the way and descents into the valley or to the urban environment are also highlighted along the edge. Information about cottages, where a QR code has been added as a novelty, will be welcome – for skilled smartphone users. Everything is enhanced by interesting, larger photos that have a motivating effect on potential participants of this route. The guide to the Slovenian mountain trail is an accurate and reliable source of information necessary for the mountaineering adventures of all those who want to get to know this trail in its entirety.”
