Beneath Slovenia’s oldest town you’ll find one of the country’s most impressive wine cellars. Along the two kilometres of damp photogenic tunnels are ornately decorated wooden barrels, modern production facilities, more than a few rooms that could easily be sets in any number
of horror films and one of the most extensive wine archives we’ve ever seen in person, stacked floor to vaulted ceiling with bottles dating back more than 100 years and worth up to five figures at auction. Set above Ptuj Wine Cellar all this are the modern reception and tasting rooms, which would look like they’ve been lifted directly from some 19th-century Austrian nobleman’s castle, were it not for walls covered with recent international wine awards.
Indeed it’s both one of Slovenia’s most awarded and largest producers, with some 1.7m litres bottles annually – 85% of which is white. Located the eastern part of the old town (the entrance is in the courtyard), it’s just a few minutes’ walk from the nearby Ptuj Tourist Information Centre.
