Edvard Grieg was the leading Scandinavian composer of his day. For his Violin Sonata No. 3,  he drew on Norwegian folk music. Carl Frühling is a less well known composer who began his career writing salon music before embarking on more extensive works, among them his Fantasie for Flute and Piano.  Sergei Prokofiev composed his Sonata for Two Violins  as an experiment after hearing what he described as an “unsuccessful piece” for violin duo. Heinz Holliger is an oboist, composer and conductor, who composed his work (é)cri(t)  as a study of the expressive power of the flute. Best known for his film scores, Nino Rota also composed works in a variety of other genres, among them his Trio for Flute, Violin and Piano.  These works will be performed by musicians who have all been guest teachers at the Ljubljana Festival Masterclasses for a number of years: violinist Latica Honda-Rosenberg, who combines a successful international career as a concert violinist with teaching at universities in Freiburg and Berlin; violinist Lana Trotovšek, who has achieved international acclaim through her recordings of chamber music by Beethoven, Brahms and Prokofiev and numerous concert appearances; flautist Felix Renggli, who has premiered numerous contemporary works with the Swiss Chamber Soloists and the Ensemble Contrechamps; pianists Thomas Haberlah, a frequent accompanist at international festivals and masterclasses, including the Ticino Musica Festival in Lugano and Evgeny Sinaiski, professor of chamber music and official accompanist at the Private University of Music and Arts in Vienna.
