Glamping has become increasing popular over the last decade or so, but how did it start, and where are some of the best resorts that might temp the most comfort-loving hotel goers out of their rooms and into the wilderness?

History of glamping
The word ‘glamping’ first began appearing in 2005, and in 2016 it was officially recognised and added to the Oxford English Dictionary. But while the word ‘glamping’ is still relatively new, the concept of luxury camping has been around for centuries. Ottoman sultans would have their palatial tents relocated from one military mission to the next, wealthy nomads would travel with their giant tents, along with carpets and servants. And we’ve all seen the old movies where rich gentry would take a safari holiday and sleep alongside the jungle animals.

Perhaps the most extravagant example of glamping from history was a political meeting in June 1520 between Henry VIII and Francis I of France. The two young kings, along with several thousand other participants, created a ‘campsite’ that took over an area of around 10,000 square metres in Balinghem, northern France. By today’s standards, with its music, dancing and feasting, it could be more likened to a festival than a meeting between royals. The staggering scene is depicted in the painting The Field of the Cloth of Gold and now hangs in the royal collection at Hampton Court, London.

So what’s glamping like today?
The above mentioned examples may have been luxurious for their times, but compared to today they are still lacking some of the amenities that have become standard. Electricity, hot running water and WI-FI, are the very least one can expect. Glamping has become popular with families and groups of friends (particularly those who can’t do without their hair-straighteners and mobile devices), as well as honeymooners who perhaps have a history of camping but want that extra special experience. Some resorts are so luxurious, you’ll struggle to find a difference between them and a high ranking hotel.

Slovenia has not been left behind with this modern twist of camping and boasts many resorts who can cater for the nature-loving traveler’s every wish. Helping to get Slovenia recognised as a glamper’s paradise is local company, GlamPro. Made up of a team of creative designers, architects, engineers, marketing and other experts, they develop unique projects and products in the glamping, resorts and tourism sector. GlamPro are an exclusive partner of the Adria Mobil Group, and are proud to have been involved in some of the world’s highest ranked glamping resorts.
