Ljubljana Airport Unveils €5.35 Million Taxiway Upgrade

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport has completed a major upgrade to its taxiway system, marking one of the biggest airside infrastructure improvements in recent years at the airport. The centerpiece of the initiative is Taxiway J, a newly constructed 170-metre‑long and 30‑metre‑wide connector located just 250 metres from the threshold of Runway 12, linking directly to Taxiway A.

Between March and June 2024, contractor Gorenjska Gradbena Družba laid nearly 9,000 m² of asphalt for the new Taxiway J and renewed about 20,000 m² on the existing Taxiway A. The removed asphalt was recycled and repurposed at other locations.

To meet modern safety and efficiency standards, the project included installation of approximately 35 km of cabling, 59 new LED lights integrated into a dedicated control system, and ten new signs marking Taxiway J.

Slovenia’s Economy Rebounds – GDP Up 0.7% in Second Quarter

Slovenia’s economy recorded a positive turnaround in the second quarter of this year, as gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.7% year-on-year, following a decline of around 0.6% in the first quarter. The main driver of the rebound was private consumption, which rose by 3.6%, largely fueled by increased spending in the services sector.

The figures suggest that consumers are slowly returning to higher levels of spending, offering hope for further economic stabilization. This recovery contrasts with the negative annual growth trend at the start of the year. Outlooks for the remainder of 2025 remain cautiously optimistic, provided that consumer confidence and service-sector stability continue to support growth.

Benjamin Šeško Joins Manchester United in Record-Breaking Transfer

Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško has completed a historic move to Manchester United, becoming the most expensive Slovenian player of all time. The 22-year-old joins from RB Leipzig in a deal reported to be worth between €76.5 and €85 million, depending on performance-related add-ons. Šeško has signed a contract until the summer of 2030, with United viewing him as a key part of their long-term attacking plans. Head coach Ruben Amorim praised his physical strength, technical ability, and immense potential. The signing marks a major statement from United as they continue to rebuild their squad following last season’s disappointing campaign.

Balancing Human Impact and Nature at Lake Cerknica

Lake Cerknica, Slovenia’s largest intermittent lake, faces growing challenges from climate change and human activity. Shifts in rainfall patterns and higher temperatures have altered its natural cycle, leading to lower spring and summer water levels and longer droughts, threatening fish spawning and bird nesting. Human practices, particularly annual mowing after 1 August, further damage crucial reed beds that provide habitat for rare species. To address this, the LIFE-TRŠCA project is testing rotational mowing and habitat restoration. Experts stress that while adaptation is natural, today’s rapid changes risk outpacing the ecosystem’s ability to recover, endangering its rich biodiversity.

Luka Dončić Signs Three-Year Extension with the Lakers in Blockbuster Deal

In a major move that has stunned the NBA world, Luka Dončić has officially signed a three-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, solidifying his role as the face of the franchise for years to come. The announcement came after weeks of speculation and was confirmed on Monday, sending waves through the basketball community.

The Slovenian superstar, known for his elite playmaking, scoring, and clutch performances, will now continue to don the iconic purple and gold jersey through at least the 2027–28 season. Sources close to the deal report that the extension includes player options and performance-based incentives, underlining the Lakers’ full commitment to building around Dončić.

This move marks a significant moment not only for the Lakers but for international basketball fans, as Dončić continues to elevate his legacy on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Slovenia Becomes First EU Country to Ban Weapons Trade with Israel

In a groundbreaking move, Slovenia has officially banned all arms exports and military trade with Israel, becoming the first EU member state to do so. The decision was announced by the Slovenian government this week, citing growing humanitarian concerns and the ongoing conflict in Gaza as key reasons for the embargo.

The ban includes the suspension of all licenses for the export, import, and transit of weapons and military equipment to and from Israel. Slovenian officials emphasized that the country is taking a clear stand for human rights and international law, following months of civil society pressure and parliamentary debates.

This historic policy shift is already resonating across the EU, potentially setting a precedent for other nations to reassess their own defense ties with Israel. Human rights organizations have praised Slovenia’s decision as a bold and ethical step in line with international humanitarian principles.
