Slovenia’s Wine Gem: Discovering the Beauty and Flavor of Golden Hill Winery

Zlati grič (eng. Golden Hill) ) is one of the most modern wineries in this part of Europe. The wine cellar has been operating under this name since 1991 and continues the tradition of the Slovenian Agricultural Company, founded in 1945. The current wine cellar was completed in 2009.

Škalce protected area, with Golden hill wine cellar is covered with vineyards filled with mystery, romance, and rich cultural heritage.  Škalce vineyards are one of the most photographed vineyards in Slovenia and located in the heart of Slovenske Konjice, the town of roses and wine and many times awarded as the most beautiful small town in Slovenia.

Škalce vineyards

On 75 ha of originally stacked plots of vineyards, Golden Hill continues the 800-year-old tradition of wine production in the area and co-shape the uniqueness of the landscape. In the 12th century, the first chartusian monks came to our area from Burgundy in France. They are the ones that started the winemaking tradition in the area. As our area lies at the same latitude as Burgundy in France and has a similar climate, the monks brought Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which today still give excellent results.

Among the grape varieties dominate white varieties: Welschriesling and Rhenish Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Gris, Traminer, Sauvignon and Rizvanec, which we use in couvee Konjičan, by which the wine cellar is best known. It is a blend of four varietals: Rhein Riesling, Mueller Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, and Welsch Riesling. Among reds we grow Blaufranconian and Pinot Noir.  White varieties (90%)  dominate mainly due to tradition and natural conditions, as our area has a continental climate, which results in higher acids in the grapes, that gives the wine freshness. Due to the smaller loads on the vines (from 1-3 kg of grapes), we produce only high-quality and top-quality wines. We are involved in integrated grape production, which guarantees nature-friendly method of production.

The wine cellar covers 3.500m2, with a capacity of 1.3 million litters of regularly awarded fresh, matured, rare, and sparkling wines. We strive that our wines to represent local terroir.

The Golden Hill Wine Cellar

The wines of Golden hill are divided in three different segments. Classic label expresses a favourable mix of freshness, primary aromas, and elegance. For the reserve wines, the grapes come from selected vineyards. The wine is matured in wooden casks and is complex, rich, and bottled only in the best vintages. The grapes for our sparkling wines come from our superb wine-growing sites. Sparkling wines are produced by traditional method and mature at the nearby monument Žička kartuzija, the most important monastery across Central Europe, dating back to the 12th century.

The wines of Golden hill are regularly awarded at the most important international wine competitions
