Much as the region of Prekmurje in the far northeast of Slovenia is something of a crossroads or melting pot of cultures and histories, so to is the story behind the Marof winery.

The estate’s name is derived from the German word ‘Meierhof’, by which it was known at the beginning of the 20th century. In the last decade or so, the winery has made great strides in establishing itself as one of the top wine producers in the country, with investment in state-of-the-art facilities that combined with tradition- Marof al winemaking techniques result in some exceptional white wines.

With vineyards located on some 40 hectares of unspoilt land in the Goričko hills leading all the way to the Hungarian border, the estate itself is situated some 16km directly north of Murska Sobota, on a route through heavy forests that will have you thinking you’ve lost your way at least once on your first visit – but keep on the road and you’ll eventually emerge at the modern wine cellar and renovated castle surrounded by vineyards.
