What are Slovenes celebrating with bonfires?
Bonfires are an important part of Slovenian cultural heritage, originally having a social character. Bonfires are lit across Slovenia on the evening before May 1st, International Workers’ Day, which falls on April 30th. This year, bonfires will be lit on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024, followed by the next 2 days, May 1st and 2nd, being public holidays.
The roots of bonfires go back to ancient pagan times when people lit bonfires as a symbolic act to encourage the power of the sun. Later, bonfires also served as a means of signaling, warning of the danger of Turkish invasions. However, today’s practice of bonfires, especially on the eve of Labor Day, carries a completely different meaning. At that time, workers express their rights and highlight their importance. Nevertheless, the original purpose has somewhat faded, and bonfires have become more of a tradition than an expression of social message.

At 8:00 PM, we invite all torchbearers who will help us light the bonfire to join us on the square in Mestni park. At 8:30 PM, accompanied by the Gornja Radgona Brass Band and the Gornja Radgona Fire Department with lit torches, we will march to TŠC Trate, where musicians will ensure a great atmosphere alongside culinary offerings. This year, we’ll be entertained into the late night by the ROCK PARTYZANI!

Bonfire Celebration in Ptuj 2024
Ptuj also hosts a traditional bonfire celebration, which will take place on Tuesday, April 30th, at 7:00 PM, at the Panorama beneath Ptuj Castle. Performances by Ljubavnici, Nina Donelli, Dejan Dogaja Band, and Skupina Smile.

The traditional bonfire gathering in Slivnica will take place earlier this year. On Friday, April 26th, at 7:00 PM, at the sports park of the Sports Association Slivnica near Maribor.

Once again, the Tourist Association of Kranjska Gora will organize the traditional bonfire celebration in Kranjska Gora. It will take place on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 6:00 PM, at the ski slope next to the Oštarija Inn in Kranjska Gora.

Bonfire Celebration at Kipe in the Municipality of Trbovlje 2024
The traditional bonfire celebration at Kipe will take place on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Kipe. Performances by Fehtarji, Calypso, and Delavska godba Trbovlje. Children’s program and animations, along with the lighting of a small bonfire, will start from 4:00 PM onwards.
Primorska Region
Bonfire Celebration in Primorska at Socerb Castle 2024
On Wednesday, May 1st, the celebration will begin with the traditional hike organized by the Coastal Mountaineering Association. It will continue with a performance by the St. Anton Brass Band and a concert by Dean Kozlar – Luigi with his musical group. Hosts Iztok Gustinčič and Tomaž Klepač will ensure a lively atmosphere among the visitors, while the youngest attendees will be entertained by the magician Sam Sebastian.
The fun continues on Thursday, May 2nd, with performances by the bands Čuki and P. Valiak (Parni Valjak tribute) at Socerb.
