The exhibition ART VITAL, which will present the joint work and life of the renowned artistic duo, will offer the first multifaceted insight into the period between 1976 and 1988—the canonical twelve years of shared life and creation of Ulay and Marina Abramović, key figures in performance art.
The exhibition will not be structured chronologically but will instead focus on showcasing their nomadic way of life, which marked the early years of their collaboration. It will present their personal archaeology, interwoven with transcultural and transhistorical materials collected from all over the world. All phases of their collaboration and the themes they explored will be represented. In addition to their iconic performances, documented through video recordings, photographic series, and memorabilia, the exhibition will be enriched with ephemeral and archival materials—such as photographs, recordings, music playlists, books, letters, and even personal notes that have never before been shown to the public.
Alongside the exhibition, there will be a series of events, including reconstructions of performances, film screenings, and discussions, highlighting the significance of their legacy in the field of contemporary art.
A reprint of the legendary catalogue Relation Work and Detour, originally self-published by the artists in 1980, will also be issued, together with a comprehensive catalogue of the current exhibition, accompanied by extensive archival and documentary visual materials and essays by prominent international theorists.
