Croatia is full of places where it is worth stopping simply to look around for a moment. Some views await high above the sea, others on the edge of medieval towns, above river canyons or among Istrian hills. What they all have in common is that after stopping there, you will almost certainly say to yourself: “That detour was definitely worth it.”

If you enjoy finding a beautiful viewpoint during your holiday, catching a sunset or bringing home a photo that needs very little explanation, here are a few ideas for trips from Istria and Kvarner to Dalmatia and inland Croatia.

Skywalk Biokovo: Above the Makarska Riviera

One of the most famous views in Croatia awaits you in Biokovo Nature Park. The glass platform Skywalk Biokovo rises high above the Makarska Riviera and offers views of the sea, the islands and the coastline stretching far below. This is a viewpoint for those who like a little adrenaline, plenty of blue and the feeling of standing on the edge of summer.

Lubenice on Cres: A Stone Village Above a Turquoise Cove

Lubenice on Cres is a small stone settlement perched high above the sea. Even a walk through the village has a special charm, but the real reason to visit is the view towards Sveti Ivan Beach and the turquoise cove far below. This is one of those places where you do not need to do much. It is enough to stop, look towards the sea and let the location do the rest.

Providenca on Lošinj: An Evening Above the Islands

On Lošinj, the Providenca viewpoint is one of the most beautiful places to end the day. From there, the view opens towards the sea, the islands and the Lošinj archipelago, making it especially popular at sunset. Providenca is a viewpoint for moments when you are in no hurry. When it is enough to sit, look towards the sea and wait for the day to slowly turn into evening.

Motovun: A View Across the Istrian Hills

Motovun is already one of the most picturesque towns in Istria. From the town walls, the view opens across the Mirna Valley, vineyards, forests and soft Istrian hills. This is not Croatia of sea horizons, but of green inland landscapes, excellent cuisine, wine and small historic towns.

Zrmanja Canyon: River, Rocks and Wild Landscape

Zrmanja is one of Croatia’s most beautiful rivers, and its canyon offers scenes that are very different from classic summer images by the sea. Steep cliffs, the green shades of the river and the feeling of open landscape create a view that is especially popular among nature lovers and photographers. Zrmanja Canyon is a great idea for a trip when you feel like discovering something calmer, more natural and less expected.

Rastoke: Water, Waterfalls and Houses by the River

Rastoke near Slunj is not a classic high viewpoint, but a place where the eye stops at the water. Waterfalls, wooden bridges, mills and houses along the river streams create a scene best explored slowly. If you are travelling towards Plitvice or returning from inland Croatia, Rastoke is one of the most beautiful stops for a walk, a photo and a little peace by the water.

Perhaps this year’s most beautiful summer memory will not happen where you planned it, but at a viewpoint you reached by taking an unexpected detour.
