Slovenia is home to many remarkable valleys, but the Kamniška Bistrica Valley stands out for its exceptional beauty. It offers numerous opportunities for hiking (with Grintovec being one of the most popular peaks), walking, and cycling, along with a wide range of natural and cultural attractions.
Next to the Kamniška Bistrica mountain lodge lies the source of the Kamniška Bistrica River. At this spot, crystal-clear and icy-cold water seeps through moss-covered rocks. The water briefly collects in a small artificial lake further downstream, before eventually flowing into the Sava and Ljubljanica rivers. On a clear, sunny day, when sunlight filters through the treetops and the lake shimmers, the valley reveals its full, breathtaking charm.
Near the lake stands Plečnik’s manor, formerly known as the hunting lodge of King Alexander I. It was designed in 1932 by the renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, and during the Yugoslav era, it was frequently used by Josip Broz – Tito. Since 1970, the valley has also featured a memorial park dedicated to all those who lost their lives in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.
Where the Kamniška Bistrica River narrows the most, you’ll find the Predaselj gorges, known as Veliki (Great) and Mali (Small) Predaselj. The Great Predaselj plunges as deep as 30 meters. The gorge offers a stunning view of the crystal-clear river winding through the valley.
Also located in the valley is the Orglice Waterfall, which is about 30 meters high. It is said to produce a sound reminiscent of harmonica playing, which is how it got its name (“orglice” means harmonica in Slovene).
Throughout the Kamniška Bistrica Valley, you’ll also find many streams, along which traditional water mills once operated.
Visit Velika Planina on the Same Day
If you’re heading to the source of the Kamniška Bistrica River, it’s definitely worth visiting Velika Planina on the same day. This stunning alpine plateau is famous for its beautiful nature and its unique traditional wooden huts.
Velika Planina is the largest alpine pasture plateau in Slovenia. It spans 577 hectares of pastures and several smaller plateaus. Located near Kamnik at an altitude of 1,500 meters, it is home to numerous shepherds’ huts surrounded by dense spruce forests. It’s a truly special place and a must-see if you’re in the Kamnik or Ljubljana area.
In May, the plateau turns lush green, dotted with purple hues of the blooming Kamnik orchid (Nigritella lithopolitanica), a rare and beautiful alpine flower that grows only in this region.

On the plateau, you’ll see numerous huts with roofs made of pine shingles, a unique architectural feature found only in this alpine region. In the background, majestic peaks rise above 2,500 meters, creating a breathtaking backdrop to the landscape. The shepherds’ settlement truly comes to life in summer, helping preserve a centuries-old tradition.
At the top of the plateau stands the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, watching protectively over the settlement. While the tourist village itself may not have a long history, it holds an interesting story—and the view from up here is absolutely spectacular.
There are also several mountain inns in the area, offering delicious food to weary hikers.
