On the southwestern slopes of Globoka, overlooking the town of Ljutomer, the family tradition of winemaking has been preserved since 1936 – this is Altum, the winery led by Janez Smolkovič.
From Organic to Biodynamic
Altum’s vineyards have been under organic supervision since 2012. In 2019, they took the next step by introducing biodynamic methods into their production. This means an even stricter harmony with nature: the use of biodynamic preparations, compost, and reduced intervention in the winemaking process. Since the 2021 harvest, Altum proudly carries the Demeter biodynamic certification.
Winemaking Philosophy
Altum focuses on natural, biodynamic wines, crafted with spontaneous fermentation and no unnecessary additives. Their signature lies in experimenting with maceration – from a few days to several months – and in aging wines in amphorae, wooden barrels, and even egg-shaped vessels. All grapes are biodynamically certified, while clay and wooden containers used in the cellar give wines a unique natural texture and richness.
Altum Wines
Among the most popular labels are:
- Altum Orange – a long-macerated white wine of amber-orange color, made from hand-picked, organically grown grapes.
- Altum Sauvignon – an amber-hued macerated white wine, spontaneously fermented and aged for 23 months on fine lees: 2/3 in acacia wood casks and 1/3 in Slavonian oak barrique. Bottled unfiltered.
