The Slokar Quartet is one of the world’s best known trombone ensembles. Founded in 1973, it has appeared at leading international concert venues, presenting programmes ranging from the Renaissance to the present day, and has also commissioned many new works for trombone quartet. The programme of this concert will combine works by Baroque masters with contemporary compositions that evoke ceremonial fanfare instruments and the salpinx, predecessors of the modern trumpet, thus recalling the instrument’s history at court. The central part of the programme will consist of works from the Classical period, while the concert will end with an appealing blend of jazz and film music. Programmes of this type have taken the Slokar Quartet to major concert halls, festivals and radio stations around the world.

The ensemble’s founder, Branimir Slokar, is a soloist and teacher who has enjoyed a long international career. György Gyivicsan, professor of trombone at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, performs as a soloist and chamber musician and is also the founder of the Szeged Trombone Ensemble. Wassil Christov is solo trombonist of the Bern Symphony Orchestra and a teacher at the Bern Conservatoire. Ben Green, likewise a member of the Bern Symphony Orchestra, trained at the Juilliard School in New York. Formerly bass trombonist of the Zurich Opera, he has also played with the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in the USA. With its current programme, the Slokar Quartet illustrates the historical development of music for trombone and highlights the diversity of the little-known repertoire for trombone quartet.
