On the edge of the Karst plateau, in the picturesque village of Krajna vas near Dutovlje, stands the Štoka farm – a family winery with more than 200 years of winemaking tradition. Today, the sixth generation of the Štoka family continues the story that began on the old family estate, where their ancestors produced wine for local use with great respect for nature. Today, the wines of Štoka represent the recognizable taste of the Karst region on the international wine scene.
A Tradition Written by Six Generations
The Štoka winery is located at an altitude of 250–270 meters, in the heart of the Karst wine-growing region. The estate covers around 30 hectares of land, of which 8 hectares are vineyards with approximately 40,000–45,000 vines. The majority of the vineyards are planted with Refosco, from which the famous Teran wine is produced on the characteristic red Karst soil, terra rossa. Teran is deeply connected with the identity of the Karst region.
Alongside it, the estate also cultivates Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malvasia, Chardonnay and the indigenous Vitovska Grganja, creating a diverse range of wines with a distinctive Karst character. A special feature of the winery is the carefully conducted manual harvest, ensuring that only the best grapes are selected.

A Unique Cellar Carved into Karst Rock
The new Štoka family estate was built in 1991, when three arched underground cellars were carved directly into the living Karst rock. These provide ideal conditions for wine maturation, maintaining a constant temperature of around 16 °C throughout the year. The cellar has a capacity of approximately 80,000 liters of wine and covers more than 350 m².
One of the most unique features of the cellar is a stone barrel carved from a single block of stone, created by a local stonemason according to the family’s idea and design. In this barrel, Vitovska Grganja matures for one of the winery’s most special wines.

Wines with the Character of the Karst
Among the most recognizable wines of the Štoka winery is TeraSel – a selection of Teran, which received a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023 with an impressive 95 points. Other notable wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cara, Vitovska Grganja, and the Prima sparkling wine line, which matures for at least three years using the traditional method in a natural Karst cave.
In addition to wines, the winery also produces Teran liqueur and the brandy Krašov’c, further enriching their diverse selection.
An Authentic Karst Experience
Since 2004, visitors have been able to experience the wines of Štoka through guided tastings in a welcoming tasting room, which can accommodate up to 30 guests. The visit includes a guided tour of the cellar, an introduction to the family’s winemaking tradition, and a tasting of selected wines accompanied by local Karst delicacies.
The entire experience lasts approximately one and a half to two hours and offers an authentic insight into the world of Karst wines, where tradition, nature and hospitality intertwine. Advance reservation is required for tastings.
