One of the best known actors to emerge from the former Yugoslavia, Rade Šerbedžija is also a poet, musician and the founder of Ulysses Theatre. For decades he has captivated audiences with his powerful stage presence and the way he interweaves poetry, music and personal storytelling, creating evenings that are intimate but also strongly communicative. Music took on a special meaning in his life during the war and his departure from his homeland, when the guitar helped him cope with loneliness and life as a refugee. It was then that he wrote many of the songs he still performs today. He comes to Križanke with his band Zapadni Kolodvor, joined by three special guests: guitarist Miroslav Tadić, with whom he began a long-standing collaboration in America and who blends Baroque and classical music with Balkan folk, flamenco, jazz, blues and rock; Croatian musician Livio Morosin, with whom Šerbedžija developed a distinctive Istrian ethno-rock sound; and violinist, singer and composer Yvette Holzwarth, who works at the intersection of Balkan, Arabic, pop, jazz and experimental music. Šerbedžija has also consolidated his international profile through roles in European and Hollywood film productions, but he remains faithful to music and poetry as constants of his artistic activity. Following his successful performances at the past two editions of the summer festival, he returns this year for a third consecutive appearance, this time with a concert named after one of the best known love songs from the Balkans.
