ADDA SIMFÒNICA ALICANTE

Soloists:

PINCHAS ZUKERMAN, viola

AMANDA FORSYTH, cello

Over the last decade ADDA Simfònica Alicante has become an important part of the musical life of the Valencian Community and Spain in general. The orchestra has developed a distinctive profile through its innovative programming and regular appearances at international festivals. For this concert it is conducted by the versatile Israeli-American musician Pinchas Zukerman, who has enjoyed a distinguished career as a violinist, violist and conductor for more than half a century. He has worked with a series of prestigious orchestras and has been principal guest conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London since 2009. His discography extends to more than a hundred recordings and has earned him two Grammy awards and 21 nominations. He is joined by the cellist Amanda Forsyth, a Juno Award winner, who performs regularly with leading orchestras in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. Richard Strauss composed his tone poem Don Quixote in Munich in 1897. Consisting of an introduction, a theme, ten variations and a finale, this symphonic setting of Cervantes’s tale of the “Knight of the Woeful Countenance” depicts key episodes from the novel and was one of the most original orchestral works of its time. Don Quixote is represented by the solo cello, while his squire Sancho Panza is represented by the solo viola, frequently in dialogue with the clarinet and the tuba, for added comic effect. After a series of adventures and misadventures, the work concludes with a serene finale that portrays Don Quixote’s return to his senses and death, in what is one of the most moving and beautiful conclusions of any orchestral music of the period.
