Argeta

By far the country’s most popular brand of paté or pašteta in Slovene, small tins of Argeta have been a mainstay on pantry shelves in Slovenia and the former-Yugoslav states since 1957, and nowadays can also be found across Europe and the Middle East.

Cockta

Another iconic brand produced by Droga Kolinska, Cockta has long been widely-regarded as the Yugoslav Coca-Cola, although if you ask us it tastes far superior to its better known rival. The recipe was concocted back in 1952 by Emeric Zelinka.

Elan

Skiing is far and away the national sport of Slovenia, so it’s only appropriate that the country would boast one of the world’s top ski (and snow- board) manufacturers. Headquartered in Begunje na Gorenjskem, the company also produces sailboats and motor yachts.

Gorenje

One of Europe’s largest manufactures of home appliances takes its name from the small village of Gorenje, near the town of Velenje in the east of the country. Employing nearly 11,000 people worldwide, it is a frequent design award winner

Krka

Taking its name from the river that flows through its hometown of Novo Mesto, the Krka pharmaceutical company is one of Slovenia’s most successful enterprises, with sales of more than €1.2bn coming from operations in more than 70 countries.

Laško

Founded in 1825, Laško is by far the most popular beer in Slovenia, while the green logo of its Zlatorog lager is one of the most common sights in bars, pubs, restaurants and cafés across all of the former Yugoslav states.

Mercator

Southeast Europe’s largest retailer of fast-moving consumer goods operates under the slogan ‘The best neighbour’, and the Ljubljana-based behemoth is definitely the most ubiquitous neighbour, with some 23,000 employees and more than 1,400 shops.

Petrol

With some 300 filling stations in Slovenia and nearly 500 in total across the former Yugoslav states, Petrol’s name is literally synonymous with its primary product. It’s also Slovenia’s largest company with more than €4bn in revenue annually.

Triglav

It’s somehow fitting that the largest insurance and financial group in Slovenia take its name from the country’s symbol and highest peak, Mt Triglav. Founded in 1900 in Ljubljana, it now has more than 5,000 employees.

Radenska

There’s no shortage of mineral water in Slovenia, but only one label can bubble to the top, and that is the three hearts of Radenska, which was designed in 1931 and symbolises the three former nations of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (Serbs, Croats and Slovenes).
