Izola is turning into a mecca for film buffs<\/h2>\n

Izola, 5 June, 2019 – The seaside town of Izola<\/a> is turning into a mecca for film buffs as the international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema<\/a> festival opens there on Wednesday for the 15th consecutive year.\u00a0 Running until Sunday, the festival is a showcase for independent films that do not feature often in cinemas, on TV or computer screens, running outside established promotion and distribution channels.<\/p>\n

The festival’s selector, Varja Mo\u010dnik, has picked films that question the time we live in, wonder about the future while referencing the past. Many explore the legacy passed down to the posterity.\u00a0Young people and their experiences in a world with few prospects are the theme of two documentaries, Agostino Ferrente’s Selfie, and Jelena Maksimovi\u0107’s Taurunum Boy.<\/p>\n

Spaces that seem to have no future will also be portrayed in Ivan Salati\u0107’s You Have the Night, where life has stopped after a shipyard went bust, and Ivan Ramljak’s Home of the Resistance, a film about Tito’s crumbling memorial home in Kumrovec.<\/p>\n

The festival will feature several guests, including Serbian auteur \u017delimir \u017dilnik, who will present his latest film The Most Beautiful Country in the World, about a group of young migrants.\u00a0An exhibition celebrating 50 years of his filmmaking will be put on at the Plac Izolanov Gallery.<\/p>\n

Indian director Shaji N. Karun will be back in Izola for the screening of his latest film Olu (She), about a Gypsy rape victim, in Manzioli Square on Thursday.\u00a0Some of the films by other major directors include Paul Schrader’s First Reformed, Lucrecia Martel’s Zama and Jan Vromman’s The History of the Pig (Within Us).\u00a0Saturday night will see a screening of a 35-millimetre copy of Time Stood Still, the 1958 drama by Italian director Ermanno Olmi (1931-2018).\u00a0The films by Slovenian directors include the experimental film Newsreel 63 – The Train of Shadows by Nika Autor, who has represented Slovenia at the Venice Biennial.\u00a0Another one is Ostanki – Izpovedi Duhovom (Remnants – Confessions to Spirits), which Niko Novak and Matev\u017e Jerman made out of the footage that Vlado \u0160kafar left out of his film Mother.<\/p>\n

A fresh selection of edgy free-spirited shorts from all over the world will be screened in the Video on the Beach section, while there is also a section reserved for children and families.\u00a0The festival is where auteurs share their experiences with young talents, and many are coming back so that after 15 years once up-and-coming filmmakers often return after they have established themselves.\u00a0The screenings will be held at six open-air and indoor venues, followed by socialising at the Lighthouse accompanied by live music acts.<\/p>\n
