ROUTES<\/strong><\/p>\n

MARATHON FRANJA BTC CITY, 156 km<\/strong>
Original maratohn Franja is the longest marathon ment ony for cyclists that are well trained.<\/p>\n

TRIGLAV LITTLE MARATHON FRANJA, 97 km<\/strong>
Shorter version of the marathon, ment for all the cyclists that are not capable to ride the longer marathon.<\/p>\n

TIME TRIAL, 22\/44km<\/strong>
Time trial starts at the American Avenue from Crystal Palace in the BTC City. The course follows the American Avenue to \u0160martinska, where it turns right on \u0160martinsko road. After \u0160martinska it continues in length over 4km straight to the junction Snebersko \/ Zadobrov\u0161ko, where the road turns left towards \u0160entjakob. At the traffic lights in \u0160entjakob it turns right and goes straight to Litija until the first roundabout in Dol. Return goes back along the same route.<\/p>\n

HOFER FAMILIY & SCHOOL MARATHON FOR EVERYBODY, 22km<\/strong>
Saturday event is an easy route widouth any ascents, everybody can ride this route free of charge. Its main purpose is to get families and schoolars on bikes.<\/p>\n

VZAJEMNA KIDS MARATHON, 1200m<\/strong>
Kids event ment for all kids from 3 to 7.<\/p>\n

BARJANKA, 83 km<\/strong>
Barjanka is an event with intention to present natural beauty of Ljubljana’s swamp lands and relive memories of first cycling competitions, of the time when races were raced on gravel roads. Swamp lands of Ljubljana have great historical heritage due to find of 5.000 years old wheel with an axel. Wheel was discovered in 2002 in early spring on site of ancient village of Stara Gmajna on south west part of swamp lands.<\/p>\n

History of Marathon Franja<\/h2>\n

Marathon Franja was premierely organized on 22nd July, 1982 by our cycling club Rog (Rog at that time was a well established bicycle manufacturing company). Organizers back then decided to name it after World War II hidden hospital (now protected as a war monument) which the marathon passes on its way, thus paying tribute to the bravery of medical personnel, taking care of wounded Partisans and allied armed forces.<\/p>\n

700 cyclists took part in the first edition of the race and most of them on non-racing bicycles. At that time, not even an entire route was paved- there was a 7 km long non-paved part (from the top of Kladje to Sovodenj) that caused a lot of punctures.<\/p>\n

At the start of the third edition of then already established marathon, participants were greeted by legendary doctor\u00a0Franja Bajc Bidovec, MD,<\/b>after whom the hospital was named. She greeted and encouraged participants on occasion by famous words:\u00a0I know it won’t be easy for you, believe me, it wasn’t easy for us either…<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A diverse crowd of people took part in Franja: from tourist amateur cyclists to professionals like\u00a0Primoz Cerin<\/i>, Jure Pavlic, Valter Bonca, Robert Pintaric, Gorazd Penko<\/i>\u00a0and alike. At certain years, Marathon Franja was a part of a prestigious championship for the\u00a0Golden Rog bicycle<\/i>award, so many professional riders took part in the race for points. Many other well known Yugoslav sportsmen and women took part in Marathon Franja through the years. In the eighties, foreigners began taking part in Franja. Such was a group of cyclists from the Netherlands who joined the race on their way to the Adriatic coast.<\/p>\n

A record number of participants was first achieved in 2002, when more than 1.900 cyclists took part. Since then, the number of participants constantly grows. In recent couple of years the format of the marathon has been changed. A short version of Marathon (nicknamed\u00a0Little Franja<\/i>) was added (155km for original version and 97km for short version). And to include children and families, a special short cycling tour was introduced in 2005:\u00a0Family and school marathon for everyone<\/i> (28km) which takes place on the eve of Marathon Franja and is completely closed for traffic, making it safe for youngsters to take part.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Start and finish area were moved to another location in the city in 2005, allowing for more space for entertainment programs.
