Where 2 hike in amazing So\u010da valley?<\/h2>\n

Certain places resonate with us, hikers, in many unique and mysterious ways. Whether I can envision myself exploring one mountain top after another or just falling in love with a particular area, often-times I find myself returning to some spots again and again.<\/p>\n

The Upper So\u010da Valley<\/a> is definitely one of the corners of Slovenia where I have left bits of my heart. The Lepenjica Stream flows through the Lepena Valley creating a breathtaking scene underneath the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps.<\/p>\n

The area is packed with history and witnessed a drama of the twelve bloody Battles of the Isonzo (So\u0161ka fronta) in World War I<\/a>. So bloody, in fact, that the otherwise emerald-green So\u010da River turned completely red, which even famous writers like Hemingway<\/a> wrote about.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, in contrast to its turbulent history, the Upper So\u010da Valley boasts magnificent hiking trails, the crystal-clear So\u010da River, countless other streams and waterfalls, and serene Alpine forests. Theatrical in its perfection, many consider the Upper So\u010da Valley the most beautiful part of the\u00a0Julian Alps.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Weekend trip<\/h2>\n

As it happens, I had been planning on returning there after my fly-fishing adventure in the So\u010da River with\u00a0Journey Through Italy<\/a>\u00a0last summer (now I\u2019m proud to say I caught a big trout!), yet this time not to fish but rather hike up the Lepena Valley and see Krn Lake all frozen. While seeing white Krn Lake had been my wish for years and as such my top priority for the weekend trip, I made extra plans to visit the Great So\u010da Gorge, the Boka and Kozjak Waterfalls, and finally climb a short but sweet via ferrata called Gradi\u0161ka Tura on the way back home.<\/p>\n

Trip 2 Bovec<\/h2>\n

Tucked away in the beautiful western Slovenia on the other side of the Julian Alps, the pristine and beautiful Upper So\u010da Valley is unfortunately a very long distance from Ljubljana. As it over a 2-hour drive from our capital, I rather opted for a weekend trip with a night spent in\u00a0Skok Apartmaji<\/a>, a small and friendly house with several apartments in Bovec<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Perched between the mountains and just a stone\u2019s throw away from the white waters of the emerald-green So\u010da River, the\u00a0Skok Apartments<\/a>\u00a0are a haven for active outdoor-oriented people. They are also pets-friendly, so Hari could come too!<\/p>\n

Trip 2 Lake Krn<\/h2>\n

Nestled among towering mountains, the lonely\u00a0Lake Krn<\/a> is a picture-perfect 300-m-long and 150-m-wide lake overlooking Mt. Krn, the highest mountain of the Krn Mountains in the southwestern Julian Alps.<\/p>\n

here are basically two trails to Lake Krn; a 2.2-hour trail marked from the Lepena Valley and a 5.5-hour trail from the Savica Waterfall across the Bogatin Pass, which was built by Russian prisoners during WWI. We took the shorter trail as the other one, coming from Lake Bohinj, would\u2019ve been very hard if not impossible to hike since the still thick snow cover was all softened by the sun.<\/p>\n

30 meters wider than the\u00a0Big Lake<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Triglav Lakes<\/a>, Lake Krn is the largest high-Alpine lake in Slovenia.<\/p>\n

Treap 2 Great So\u010da Gorge, Boka Waterfall, Kozjak Waterfall, Gradi\u0161ka Tura via Ferrata<\/h2>\n

The first and more relaxed day was followed by a day packed with activities. It started at 9 a.m., when we first visited the beautiful 750-m long Great So\u010da Gorge, then the powerful 106-m tall Boka Waterfall, followed by the mysterious Kozjak Waterfall hidden in a stunning rocky amphitheater.<\/p>\n

After an excellent lunch in Kobarid, we slowly headed back towards Ljubljana with a long stop in the steep mountains near the town of Vipava.\u00a0Gradi\u0161ka Tura<\/a>, a via ferrata climb up the near-vertical walls above the small town, had been calling me for quite some time, and the warm early April temperatures were just perfect to tackle it.\u00a0The So\u010da River is the place to enjoy fly-fishing in unspoiled nature, kayaking and rafting in white waters, or hiking along the refreshing river.<\/p>\n
