Black Velvet has a bright red color of wine and it has a distinct raspberry aroma. It is relatively resistant to winter frost, but less against the spring frost. Since the beginning of budding to full maturity of the grapes takes about 170 days.\u00a0  \u017dametna \u010crnina grapes tend to\u00a0ripen\u00a0to high\u00a0sugar levels\u00a0and to produce rich wines with noticeable sweetness and\u00a0residual sugars. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u017dametna \u010crnina from the oldest vineyard in the world <\/strong><\/h2><p> A single vine of \u017dametna \u010crnina growing in the\u00a0Slovenian\u00a0town of\u00a0Maribor\u00a0is estimated by the\u00a0Guinness Book of Records\u00a0to be the\u00a0oldest living vine\u00a0still producing fruit in the world at over 400 years of age <\/p><p>The Maribor vineyard has seen a lot in its 400 years. From numerous medieval fires to vine lice and other plagues that wiped out all of its older brethren across the continent, and even Allied bombings during the Second World War that partially destroy the house on which it lives. <\/p><p>The attached house now serves as a museum dedicated to teaching visitors all there is to know about the wine culture of the region. While the old vine, which is of the \u017dametna \u010crnina or Black Velvet variety, still dutifully produces some 35kg to 55kg of grapes each year, you, unfortunately, won\u2019t be able to sample, let alone purchase, the wine made from them (unless you\u2019re a foreign head of state, high ranking dignitary, or perhaps the Pope), as the 25 liters or so is put into 250mL bottles specially crafted by famed Slovenian designer Oskar Kogoj and strictly used for national protocol gifts.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-the-slovenia\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ts4Vlmv0YQ\"><a href=\"https:\/\/the-slovenia.com\/gastronomy\/wine\/worlds-oldest-wine\/\">THE World\u2019s Oldest Wineyard<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&#8220;THE World\u2019s Oldest Wineyard&#8221; &#8212; THE Slovenia\" class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" data-src=\"https:\/\/the-slovenia.com\/gastronomy\/wine\/worlds-oldest-wine\/embed\/#?secret=ts4Vlmv0YQ\" data-secret=\"ts4Vlmv0YQ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pruning of the oldest vineyard in the world<\/strong><\/h2><p>Pruning of the Old Vine usually happens between February or March, and month-long Old Vine Festival, which culminates in Slovenia\u2019s largest St Martin\u2019s Day event on 11 November each year.
