Unsurprisingly, this ardor for wine manifests itself in a flurry of wine-related events that paint the calendar with a tapestry of flavors and festivities.<\/p><p>From the grandeur of international competitions that beckon sommeliers and connoisseurs from every corner of the globe to the cozy gatherings in charming, tucked-away villages, where bacchanalian revelry is the order of the day, Slovenia knows how to celebrate its beloved nectar. There are also cultural and educational events, such as lectures, concerts, films and art shows.<br><em>\u0160martno, Gori\u0161ka Brda,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brda.si\/\">www.brda.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u0160empas Wine Festival<\/h2><p>For two days each April the Cultural Centre in \u0160empas, near Nova Gorica, hosts a festival of wine and olive oil, where visitors can enjoy a lively atmosphere and sample local produce, including the work of winemakers from Slovenia and neighbouring countries.<br><em>\u0160empas, Vipava,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.festival-vin.si\/\">www.festival-vin.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Orange Wine Festival<\/h2><p>Slovenia has managed to muscle its way to the forefront of the increasingly popular Orange wine movement. What is Orange wine? In addition to the two-day festival programme, many of the districts best restaurants offer special menus during the concurrent Taste Vipava culinary month.<br><em>Vipava,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okusi-vipavske.si\/\">www.okusi-vipavske.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Refosco Festival<\/h2><p>For producers, the focus of this event is the professional tasting, scoring and awarding of the best Refosco (or Refo\u0161k in Slovene), but more casual visitors can simply relax and enjoy the range of wines on offer, along with tasty cuisine and entertainment.<br><em>Marezige,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.praznik-refoska.si\/\">www.praznik-refoska.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vinska Vigred<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/vinska-vigred-wine-festival-in-metlika-slovenia.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/vinska-vigred-wine-festival-in-metlika-slovenia.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vinska Vigred is one of the oldest and largest wine events in Slovenia, and it&#8217;s many happenings include the crowning of the wine queen \u00a9&nbsp;Uro\u0161 Raztresen<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Vinska Vigred festival is the largest wine event in Bela Krajina, attracting thousands visitors to Metlika\u2019s old town during the third weekend in May each year. First held more than 30 years ago, the event began as a fair for exhibiting and tasting local wines, but it has since grown into a multi-faceted cultural festival.<br><em>Metlika, Bela Krajina,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.praznik-refoska.si\/\">www.vinskavigred.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><p><strong>JUNE<\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open Cellars<\/h2><p>On the first or second weekend of June many local winemakers open their cellars and share their stories and secrets of production. As well as chance to learn more about wine-making, in beautiful and historic surroundings, there are also plenty of tastings.<br><em>Gori\u0161ka Brda,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brda.si\/\">www.brda.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ljubljana Summer Wine Route<\/h2><p>The summer event follows the form of its November incarnation, only with warmer weather and later hours, as dozens of Slovene producers set up stalls throughout the old town, offering generously poured glasses for around \u20ac1 each (special vintages, reserve selections, etc. can be higher). Local farmers also get in on the action, offering homemade cheeses, meats, honey and other treats to hungrier than usual passers-by.<br><em>Ljubljana Old Town,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ljubljanskavinskapot.si\/\">www.ljubljanskavinskapot.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modra Frankinja Festival<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/modra-frankinja-festival-slovenia.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/modra-frankinja-festival-slovenia.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Taking place at the beautiful Sevnica Castle, this festival is dedicated to the Modra Frankinja, better know internationally as&nbsp;Blaufr\u00e4nkisch<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Dedicated to the dark-skinned Modra Frankinja grape (or Blaufr\u00e4nkisch as it\u2019s most commonly known internationally), the festival is part of a larger project aiming to promote the production and quality of the wine variety locally, while also making the Posavje region one of the most recognisable centres of Blaufr\u00e4nkisch in Europe.<br><em>Sevnica, Bizeljsko-Sremi\u010d,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.modra-frankinja.com\/\">www.modra-frankinja.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><p><strong>JULY<\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grossmann Fantastic Film &amp; Wine Festival<\/h2><p>Launched in 2005 to celebrate 100 years of filmmaking in Slovenia, the organisers went one-step further and added wine, because why not? Held each summer in mid-July, this truly unique festival also in- cludes concerts, workshops and art exhibitions.<br><em>Ljutomer, \u0160tajerska,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grossmann.si\/\">www.grossmann.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vino Ljubljana<\/h2><p>Although its tradition dates back to 1811, Vino Ljubljana\u2019s modern incar- nation began in 1955, which is still good enough to make it the oldest international wine competition in the world. Both Slovene and international champions are crowned in a variety of categories each spring.<br><em>Ljubljana,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.en.vinoljubljana.si\/\">www.en.vinoljubljana.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><p><strong>AUGUST<\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Festival of Teran &amp; Prosciutto<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/festival-of-teran-and-prosciutto.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/festival-of-teran-and-prosciutto.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The name says it all &#8211; the two culinary products that the Karst region is most known for make a beautiful couple<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In mid-August the culture of the Karst region is celebrated in a festival of culture, entertainment, prosciutto and wine. Another chance to enjoy some of the best local produce while seeing a beautiful party of the country.<br><em>Dutovlje, Kras,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitkras.info\/\">www.visitkras.info<\/a><\/em><\/p><p><strong>SEPTEMBER<\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ceremonial Harvest of the Old Vine<\/h2><p>The annual harvest of the world\u2019s oldest vine in Maribor is one of the country\u2019s most exciting wine events. Guests, including government of- ficials and other VIPs, gather in front of the Old Vine House along the river to witness the ceremony, which is accompanied by cultural enter- tainment and of course wine tasting.<br><em>Maribor, \u0160tajerska,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitmaribor.si\/\">www.visitmaribor.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><p><strong>OCTOBER<\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">VinDel Wine &amp; Culinary Fair<\/h2><p>This international wine and delicacy event is one that attracts a broad range of exhibitors, and gives visitors the chance to try a huge variety of glasses and dishes. Highly recommended if in the area.<br><em>Maribor, \u0160tajerska,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vindel.si\/\">www.vindel.si<\/a><\/em><\/p><p><strong>NOVEMBER<\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wine Route in the Tunnels under Kranj<\/h2><p>Kranj\u2019s annual wine festival may be the most interesting wine event in Slovenia, as it takes place in the WWII-era tunnels underneath the old town. Held on two consecutive weekends, there\u2019s also a full programme of other events around town running concurrently.<br><em>Kranj,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitkranj.com\/\">www.visitkranj.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">St Martin\u2019s Day<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/st-martins-day-wine-festival-in-maribor-slovenia.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.inyourpocket.com\/img\/text\/slovenia\/ljubljana\/st-martins-day-wine-festival-in-maribor-slovenia.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">St Martin&#8217;s Day festivities take place all over Slovenia, but no one celebrates more than the wine-loving locals of Maribor \u00a9 Photo by Mitja Vodu\u0161ek<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Every region in Slovenia takes part in the annual celebration of St Martin\u2019s Day, to mark the production of new wine, and the events held can range from simple tastings to loud parties. The focus is on November 8 to 13, but the exact details vary from place to place.
