The members of the RTVE Chamber Orchestra are drawn from the RTVE Symphony Orchestra (also known as the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra), which was founded in 1965. A regular guest at the most important Spanish festivals, the orchestra has also performed in numerous European capitals, the USA and Japan. Marc Moncusí is a versatile conductor who is at home both with the symphonic repertoire and with opera and ballet. In 2004 he founded the Barcelona Modern Project, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of 20th and 21st century works. The soloist will be the 20-year-old pianist Dmitry Ishkhanov, considered one of the brightest talents of the new generation. Described by the Luzerner Zeitung as a successor to Evgeny Kissin and Grigory Sokolov, Ishkhanov has appeared at numerous European music festivals and performs regularly in prestigious concert halls. At the 73rd Ljubljana Festival he will perform Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor, a work that despite its title could be described as a double concerto for piano and trumpet. The Chamber Symphony in C minor is an arrangement by Rudolf Barshai of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8. The concert will begin with a work by the Catalan composer and conductor Eduard Toldrà, originally composed for string quartet. Toldrà drew inspiration for his Vistes al mar from a series of poems by Joan Maragall. The programme will end with a performance of Romanian Caprice by the Bucharest-born composer and viola player Lucian Moraru, who drew inspiration for the work from the Romanian folk song Ciocârlia (The Skylark)
