Basel Zaraa is a Birmingham-based Palestinian artist, rapper and performer. In 2017, he made his debut at the Mladi Levi Festival as a guest performer in Lebanese artist Tania El Khoury’s installation As Far As My Fingertips Take Me. He comes to Ljubljana with his theatre installation Dear Laila.
Dear Laila is the beginning of an attempt to answer the question of the artist’s five-year-old daughter as to why she cannot see her grandfather and grandmother. Zaraa uses artistic tools to build what no longer exists – a model of a family home in the Palestinian camp of Yarmouk in Damascus and the life around it. The spectator, who assumes the role of Laila, learns through real and symbolic objects about the artist’s history, the political history of bloodshed, and the private history of joy and celebration of life.
