Zorba the Greek  is an international hit ballet that continues to delight audiences of all generations, above all for the passion of its lead characters, John and Zorba, and the ballet ensemble who bring the story to life. In terms of style, the work follows the logic of classical narrative ballet, taking its inspiration from the clear structure of Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel, while also drawing on the captivating rhythmic-melodic idiom of Greek music, as composed by Mikis Theodorakis. The latter is credited with popularising the supposedly authentic sirtaki dance, characterised by long, slow pulling moves and chain dancing. Léonide Massine, was created for the new generation of the SNG Maribor Ballet ensemble, which is keen to enhance the production aesthetically and use all available means to do so. With its spiritual connection to Kazantzakis, the contemplative music of Theodorakis and the virtuoso expressiveness of Massine’s choreography, the ballet awakens not only a fascination with the picaresque beauty of Crete, but also a reflection on the meaning of life.
